Lynx - Cats - Hunting Behavior

Lynxes are nocturnal animals, by day they rest in their shelters. Lynx cats have well-developed hearing (thanks to long ear tufts) and vision, but poor sense of smell. They locate food by sight and wait in ambush, then stalk to prey as closely as is possible and pounce with 1-2 bounds or pursue for about 50 m. Lynxes tire easily after a long chase. Capture success averages 20-60%, depending on snow condition and the distance between the lynx and the prey. Lynxes need at least one hare a day. In the periods of hare abundance they cache the prey. Lynx cats are usually solitary, only mothers with kids hunt together, and sometimes groups of 2-3 adults have occasional hunting in the periods of starvation.

Lynx - Cats - Nutrition

The primary prey of lynx is snowshoe hare. Lynxes are so dependent on them that declines of hare densities cause decreases in the productivity of lynx. Summer diets include less snowshoe hare and more other prey species: squirrels (red, flying, ground), grouse, mice, moles, porcupines, shrews and fish. Occasionally lynx hunts ungulates (reindeer and roe deer), domestic animals (sheep, goats), and even other predators (mainly foxes). When hunting lynxes avoid large openings and prefer the edges of dense stands.
