Lynx cats are medium-sized with long legs, large, well-furred paws, long tufts on the ears, and a short tail. In the winter the lynx' fur is dense and grayish-brown with grayish-white or pale-brown on the belly, legs and feet. In summer lynxes are more reddish to gray-brown.
Size: Males are about 80-90 cm in length (head to tail), females are 75-85 cm.
Weight: Males average 10 kg in weight, females average 8.5 kg. (The Eurasian lynx reaches 21 kg)
Lynx - Cats - Breeding and Reproduction
Lynxes are capable of breeding during their second year. Breeding occurs in March or April, and kittens are born in May or June. The inter birth interval is usually one year with occasional breaks. During periods of hare abundance, litter size averages 4-5 kittens; in the low phase of hare cycle few if any kittens are born. Kittens open their eyes after 2 weeks and are weaned for 3 months
Lynx cats make their dens in large woody debris where downed logs and overhead cover protect kittens from predators, such as hawks, owls, and other carnivores, because the female raises the youth alone and has to leave them for hunt. During the gestation and lactation the hunting range of females is restricted and they need abundance of prey. Lynx have multiple nursery sites and move the kittens frequently until they are old enough to help the mother hunt. At 10-11 months young lynx cats disperse.
