The most common causes of lynx cats' mortality include starvation during periods of low hare numbers and human-caused mortality (fur trapping and hunting recreation). Kittens and youth are especially vulnerable. Hunger-related stress often leads to trapping or highway collisions. Also lynx population (especially kittens) suffers from predation of cougar, coyote, wolverine, mountain lion, gray wolf, and fisher. Competition with these predators contributes to lynx starvation. There exist an average 10 years interval between lynx population peaks in response to snowshoe hares population changes.
Life Span: 15 years in the wild, up to 22 years in captivity.
Lynx - Cats - Status
In 2000 the lynx cat was determined as threatened in the USA. This means that the species may go extinct if no conservation measures are taken. Lynx hunting is prohibited in Austria, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan and Turkmenistan. In Russia, China, Finland, Slovakia, Norway, Poland, Turkey, Romania and Sweden hunting is regulated.
Lynx - Cats - Conservation
In Europe the problem of lynx conservation is very acute. The main causes of population decline are destruction of habitat, loss of the European hare population, human-caused mortality and isolation of existing population. Maintenance and improvement of forests can be basic measures to reduce the isolation that creates genetic problems. Increase of rabbit density by restocking and creating artificial shelters for them contributes to lynx cats' survival.
